The Artist: Wayne Baize is one of the few western artists who lives what he paints. Born in Stamford, Texas, Wayne has always preferred to live a quiet country life and currently lives in the Davis Mountain region of West Texas near Fort Davis. He has a small ranch where he raises registered Hereford cattle. The ranch serves as a source of inspiration and retreat for Wayne. Using a variety of media over the years, Wayne now uses pencil in a mixed media with acrylic highlights. This gives an incredibly soft finish to his work. Wayne draws primarily from photographs he takes of cowhands as they work. The scenery, horses, cattle and men may be drawn to suit a mood, but the subjects are all genuine. Wayne’s work has been featured at galleries in Dallas, Midland, and San Angelo, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming. He participates in Stamford Cowboy Reunion and the Governor’s Invitational Show held during Cheyenne Frontier Days. Wayne was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America in 1995.

The Painting: "Twins" paints a great picture of the working cowboy coming up on a great site: the mother cow and her twin calves. The natural scene of livestock and environment is wonderful to behold. The addition to the herd is always welcome. "What I like to portray is the everyday routine of the working cowboy, both as it is now and as it was a century ago. I prefer to show men working on the open range rather than in pens, and I don’t include power lines, pickups, or other modern-day conveniences. I guess I’m a romantic for leaving those things out, but I think it gives the painting a stronger sense of the past."
