Jack Hines

Jack Hines was born in rural Nebraska, hard by the traces of the Oregon Trail. In childhood, he found pathways to the past in the drawings he would make. In this way and in solitary walks along river banks and prairie trails, the touch with the People of the Plains came to him.

Jack's art career has followed a unique path. The lessons learned in sign shops, silk screen plants and advertising agencies provided technical insights possibly not learned elsewhere. His formal art education began at the Art Center and Chouinard Art Institute, both in Los Angeles. He then went on to the Art Students League in New York.

In 1972, Jack left the East after 28 years, to become a manager of a Montana cattle and guest ranch. He used this time to reabsorb the quality of light and life necessary for the land and the people for whom he felt such an affinity.

Jack lives and works in Big Timber, Montana with his talented artist wife Jessica Zemsky. They have a studio and home in town and a log cabin studio in the Beartooth Mountains. They spend as much time as possible living Indian style in their tepee in the back country.

Jack's work is shown at Trailside Galleries in Jackson and Scottsdale and at White Oak Gallery in Minneapolis. He is a member of the National Art Club and a founding member of the Northwest Rendezvous artists group.
