How to Evaluate an Art Piece

The following scale will be useful when comparing works of art and choosing the right one for you.

Rate the following on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being NOT GOOD and 10 being EXCELLENT.

Attributes Write in your personal rating number
STYLE: Do you like work to be very realistic or impressionistic or abstract?  

DOES IT MAKE A STATEMENT

 

VISUAL IMPACT - Is it something you can live with every day?

 

EMOTIONAL IMPACT - Does it arouse an emotional spark of some kind?

 
COMPOSITION:  

Use of FORM - It can be solid, implied, positive, negative, Do you like it?

 

Use of LINE - Defines movement in the piece. Does it work for you?

 

Use of COLOR - It can be bold, muted, primary. Do the colors suit you?

 

Use of SPACE - It is used to create illusion, is the space right to you?

 
OVERALL COMPOSITION:  

MEDIA - Generally price is highest for an oil, lowest for penciled works.

 

COMPARED TO OTHER WORKS - How does it rate with paintings of similar subjects?

 

ORIGINALITY OR IMPORTANCE - How important is this piece in the overall artist’s production?

 

CONDITION - Scratches, marks, dirty?

 

ARTISTIC INTEGRITY AND CONVICTION - Does this look to you like it was carefully planned work or was it done haphazardly?

 

AESTHETIC QUALITY - The tangible that makes this work mean something to you personally.

 

TECHNIQUE - How the materials were applied - brush, pallet knife. Does it appeal to you?

 

PRICE - Is it within your budget?
