Description: Jack says that "The Mystery of the Buffalo Totem" is perhaps the most important piece I have done." It is very symbolic of the religion of the Plains People, and incorporates a Cheyenne-style painted buffalo rove, Lakota Sioux medicine paint on the buffalo skull, a Mandan headdress and a Blackfeet bear claw necklace.

The symbolism epics the universality of dependency of the Plains People upon the buffalo. The eagle-wing fan projects the holy status of the golden eagle as the Messenger of the Great Spirit. All of the tribes saw him that way.

The goal here was to represent all of the Plains People in the one allegorical figure and to emphasize their spirituality. That factor is to be found specifically in the bathing of the man in the strong, warm light. It comes through the smoke flap opening of the lodge. The opening always faced east, as did the doorway, to catch the first sunlight (the Great Spirit). This was the holiest time of day of the People.
