Released October 1988. "Winter Arrival" is a scene out of the Davis Mountains in far West Texas. There are several snows each winter, seldom any of them very severe. Most of the time the snow melts off the same day or the next, so it is usually not too hard on the livestock.

Winter births are not uncommon in many parts of the country, laying to rest the misconception that all livestock are born in April and May. Births are timed by the livestock owners to coincide with the normal weather patterns and available food supplies.

The Hereford calf in the print is one in a long line of a breed that was introduced in Texas in 1878. While there is a dispute over who first brought Herefords into the West, there is no doubt who made them a commercial success. Charlie Goodnight bought an entire herd of 25 bulls, 600 cows and 400 calves at an average of $75 a head, which was higher than the $15 a head prevailing rate for cattle, for his Panhandle Ranch. Ultimately, the "slick-haired" stock replaced the old longhorns, which became as scarce as the buffalo it supplanted.

In "Winter Arrival," Wayne is depicting the patterns made by the snow, the cattle and the trees and ground cover. Wayne says these elements appeal to him as an artist and it was a challenge to combine all the elements into a painting.
