Description:In "Bringing the Remuda," Wayne depicts one of the working cowboy's many tasks during a roundup -- bringing the horses into camp or ranch headquarters. Remudas are an instrumental part of a cattle roundup. When camps have to be moved to another location, the "remuda," saddle horses, are brought along to be ready for the day's work. The remuda may consist of up to three hundred horses, depending on the number of cowboys on the roundup. Each cowboy has a saddle string (mounts) made up of seven to ten head, with each cowboy using three fresh mounts a day.

The horse wrangler is responsible for the care of the remuda. His job includes letting the horses graze, keeping them watered and helping the cowboys catch a fresh mount. This was a job many cowboys started out doing to learn the ways of the working ranch.

Wayne says cowboys judge a ranch by how good the horses are and the skills of the camp cook. When you look at "Bringing the Remuda," which cowboy do you think is the horse wrangler? How big do you think the ranch is? Do the horses look fresh or are they being returned to the remuda for rest? Do the cowboys look well fed?
